Spring Checklist for Preventing Flood

Inspect the landscaping around the perimeter of the home to verify the ground slopes away from the foundation.

Inspect gutter downsprouts. You will want drainage from the roof to flow away from the house. You can do that by attaching a small culvert/ drain pipe to downsprout and diverting water.

Secondary water supply valve should be off before the city pressurizes it. Once it is pressurized, you can turn the valve on and inspect your sprinklers to make sure there aren’t any breaks.

When you uae your hose bibs for the first time in spring, it is best to inspect the basement immediately after turing them on. You usually don’t know a hose bib has frozen until you turn it on in the spring.

KNOW WHERE YOUR WATER SHUT-OFF IS. In the event of a burst pipe within the home, this will insure your ability to shut the water off as quickly as possible.

Speak with your insurance agent about flood insurance. Insurance companies generally don’t cover flooding from ground water unless you have a specific rider on your policy.

Inspect water valves in the utility room, kitchen/bathroom sinks, toilets to ensure there is no corrosion. Corrosion is an indication that is already leaking and should be replaced.
